Some General Safety Rules for Sailing

Sailing is a brilliant hobby that has so much to give. You can keep learning more about it for years to come – even the most experienced sailors are still learning new things about their boats, sailing equipment and sailing techniques. If you are new to the hobby, here are some basic safety tips to learn:

  1. 1. Take plenty of spare clothing and waterproofs in case you are stranded or get sea sick. Make sure you have plenty of food and fluids on board.

2. Be careful about conditions. You shouldn’t sail at sea, or in sea-like conditions, unless you have experience with bouyage, charts and I.R.P.C.S. If you don’t you could take someone else who does as a member of your crew.

3. Carry essential equipment at all times, like an anchor, life jackets, a waterproof timepiece, first aid kit, alternative paddle or oars and a reliable compass. These are just the basics and you may well carry more equipment.
